a little now, a little in the past (2024)A little now, a little in the past (2024), is an experimental video project. It aims to delve into the relationship we have with physical homes and the idea of home. How this shapes us, develops alongside us and parts ways with us. The work combines impromptu filming and philosophical inquiry to present a reflective, participatory narrative.

In March of 2024, I met a girl. Her parents had just divorced, her family split, the childhood home sold. Luckily, she remembered the security codes and she was able to do one last walk through her home.

The concept of home is undergoing profound transformations in the face of new lifestyles, increasing urban populations, shifting working conditions, migration, and the pressures of capitalism. In New York, a home might be what others would deem a garden shed, while in London, parking garages sell for over £300,000. In Korea, pod homes are stacked on top of one another to accommodate soaring housing demands.

The relationship we have with the idea of home, while existing in these conditions, was something that really interested me.

In the broader context of the climate crisis and escalating geopolitical tensions, the concept of home as we know it faces existential challenges. As we navigate this uncertain future, rethinking and resituating home within the complexities of our world becomes not just an exercise but a necessity.

To contribute to this, the work combines personal stories, conversations and research about contemporary definitions of home.

The conclusion of the work is in it’s title, constructing home through past and present.
